Call to Artists
The SouthShore Arts Council is planning a major Mural project in Ruskin, and is seeking applications from qualified artists. This will be the second Mural commissioned by the SSAC, the first being an 18’ X 100’ Mural, “Head, Heart and Hands”, done under the direction of Artist Michael Parker in 2008, as part of The Big Draw Ruskin, 2008.
See: www.SouthShoreArtsCouncil.org
The Mural will be done in conjunction with the Big Draw 2009, sponsored by the SSAC.
The project is for a landmark building in Ruskin, projected to be begun in late summer. The building is owned by the Mary Martha House, an organization which provides services to families. It is a piece of unique curved architecture. The concept, design, and execution of the Mural will be directed by the Artist, working in collaboration with a community group. The theme and general nature of the Mural, as developed by the Artist and the group, will be created with consideration of the interests of the non profit group which owns and operates the building.
The budget for the total project, to include materials, equipment, insurance and Artist’s fee, will be $13,000. Additional budget has been allocated for preparation and priming of the surface
The selection of the artist, by the SSAC review board, will be based on a careful consideration of the following qualifications. A successful applicant should have strength in at least three of the following criteria.
- A record of successful public art projects.
- Experience in teaching, and/or of working with community groups in the visual arts.
- A record of professional exhibitions at Museums or Galleries.
- An education in Art.
The project will extend over a period of a few months, and the Artist will need to plan to be in Ruskin frequently during the project, which will run from August to November.
