Bay Area Artists First to Fill New Digital Artbook
Congratulations to the many Bay area artists now featured in the digital ArtBook Archive! We first mentioned the call for artists by HD Interactive at the first of the year when they were creating their Apple store app to showcase artists. Now in Volume II, it's great to see so many of our Arts Info subscribers were accepted for publication.  http://artbookarchive.com/. Applications were judged and curated by four local experts:

Alec Baldwin, Ben Folds Speak to Congress on Arts Advocacy, Importance of Government Funding

On April 17, 2012, Arts Advocacy Day began with the Congressional Arts Kick-Off on Capitol Hill. At the event, actor Alec Baldwin and musician Ben Folds joined a host of acclaimed artists and members of Congress to speak before the press and advocates from across the country about the importance of government funding for the arts.

Teens Learn Science Through the Arts

Community Stepping Stones teamed up with the Tampa Bay Estuary Program for a program that brings environmental science into the art studio. The CSS campus sits on the Hillsborough River at the top of the Tampa Bay estuary basis (where fresh and salt water meet.) Science teacher, Diana Kyle, uses after school sessions to share lessons on ecology. Continue reading

New NEA Research Report Shows Potential Benefits of Arts Education for At-risk Youth

Poverty-prone neighborhoods like Sulphur Springs are in luck as a handful of local Tampa Bay nonprofit organizations such as Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCAUnited Way of Tampa Bay and Community Stepping Stones have begun focusing on local communities currently experiencing the effects of generational poverty.

Community Stepping Stones Offers Sulphur Springs Youths Free Art Classes

Update on CSS, an Arts Council community grant recipient, from the Tampa Bay Times. The organization offers classes for youth in the underserved neighborhood.

2012 Class Offerings at CCC

Carrollwood Cultural Center holds many classes in art, ceramics, dance, music and theatre for all ages. Among the many experienced, community artists teaching a variety of disciplines at the center are Lynda Goetz, Teil Rey, Betty Rey, Gainor Roberts, Darwin Leon, Dore Anderson, David Khalil, and more. The center also offers a variety of fitness classes. The 2012 calendar is posted on their website along with registration rules.

Federal Study Shows NCLB Impact on Arts Education

On April 2, the U.S. Department of Education released a study entitled Arts Education in Public Elementary and Secondary Schools 1999-2000 and 2009-10. This study was previously published in 2002, prior to implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Arts education advocates are very pleased to finally see an update, even if a full decade later.

Tampa Printmaker Wins $10K Best of Show Award

John Costin won Best of Show, a purchase award of $10,000, at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival in March. It was his 20-piece series of etchings that clinched the prize. See photo and details

Congratulations to the musicians selected for the 2012 Friday Extra concerts. The 25th annual concert series runs March 30-May 25 in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Lowry Park. Read more

City of Tampa Begins Work on Promenade of the Arts
